I was discussing Chess with my 11 year old nephew and he asked me why the Castle is also called a “Rook”.

Could you please help me with this question.

The term comes from the Arabian “rukh” which means “battle-carriage”.

The English word Rook sounds very much like “rukh” which may explain it's name.

The Rook sometimes is also called “the castle”.
