Can a player perform castling while being in check?

No, it is not legal to do so.
As an example, in the following position, white has just moved his Rook to e1 and checks the black King:
Black pieces cannot castle while being in check. Suggested moves for black on this example could be to move the Bishop to e6 or the other Bishop to e7. Afterward, black can castle on his next move.
