Dear friends,
I like to play Chess quite often in your "Let's Play Chess" page. I'd like to know if it is possible to download the program on my laptop computer and play without being connected to the internet.
The reason is that I work a midnight shift and spend long hours alone, monitoring network systems and I can't use the net at work.
Thank you.
Brian
Dear visitor,
There are two ways to accomplish this:
You may download the java applet from
http://www.lokasoft.nl/ and create an html page in your laptop to run it locally.
Another option for playing Chess without being connected to the internet is to download the WinBoard program. This .exe file is located at:
http://www.chess-poster.com/english/pgn/pgn_files.htm.
Just scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the WINBOARD link and follow installation instructions.
This program runs in any Windows based platform computer as a standalone application. WinBoard allows you to play against GNU Chess program as well as several other Chess engines included in a drop down list (ver. 4.5). You can also use this software to review pgn files and analyze Chess games.
After playing often in our Chess page as you mention, you may find WinBoard GNU program hard to beat because it has a playing strength between 2100 and 2400+ depending on the speed processor of your machine.
Thank you for visiting us,
