FIDE's World Chess Championship will take place on May 2012 in Moscow, Russia between the defending Champion Viswanathan Anand and the winner of the Candidates Match Boris Gelfand.

On April 2011, the official Candidates' tournament was held in Kazan, Russia and consisted of some short knockout matches in an eight-player Candidates' tournament. 

This event determined the challenger for the current World Chess Champion Viswanathan Anand, GM Boris Gelfand from Israel. The other contenders were Veselin Topalov, Vladimir Kramnik, Levon Aronian, Teimour Radjabov, Alexander Grischuk, Gata Kamsky, and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov.

GM Magnus Carlsen declined to participate in disagreement of the process and format of the event despite being qualified as the highest rated Chess player in the world. Should another player decides to withdraw, Dmitry Jakovenko would be eligible from the reserve list.
