Robert Fischer resurfaced in 1992 at the little island of Sveti Stefan just off the coast of war-torn Yugoslavia from a reclusive self-imposed exile to challenge Boris Spassky to a rematch and reclaim his crown. This thirthy-game match
called “The $5,000,000 Bobby Fischer Comeback” was
played from September 2 to November 5, 1992 and was presided by International Arbiter Lothar Schmid of Germany who presided over the 1972 match in Reykjavik. The prize fund was $5.000.000 US, of which the first player to win
ten games would receive $3.650.000 US. Final score was 17.5 Fischer, 12.5 Spassky. |
